Dread Wood by Jennifer Killick (2022)
Set in a high school, the story follows Angelo, a teenage boy who finds himself being blackmailed by someone who knows his secret. In order to keep it hidden, he must purposely get into trouble and serve a Saturday detention. The plot thickens when Angelo and his fellow detention companions discover that the school’s caretakers, Mr. and Mrs. Latchet, have a strange habit of constantly humming and whistling the tune of ‘Incy Wincy Spider’. But things take a terrifying turn when the detention supervisor is suddenly dragged underground, leaving the group in a state of panic.
I was instantly hooked by the unique premise of ‘Dead Wood’. The author, with their flawless writing, had me on the edge of my seat from the very first page. The narration was so vivid and descriptive that it was impossible to put the book down. Moreover, the characters were well-developed, with each having a distinct personality. The big reveal of the blackmailer’s identity was shocking and satisfying, tying together all the loose ends in a pleasing manner.
In conclusion, ‘Dread Wood’ was an exceptional read that I highly recommend to fans of young adult fiction. It had everything I look for in a book.
