A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (2007)

The book takes us on a journey through the lives of Mariam and Laila, two women from different generations and backgrounds. Mariam, an illegitimate child, grows up in a small village and is forced into an arranged marriage with a much older man named Rasheed. Laila, on the other hand, is a young girl who dreams of a brighter future. As their lives intertwine, Mariam and Laila face unimaginable challenges and hardships, including war, oppression, and domestic abuse. Despite their circumstances, they find strength in their friendship, supporting each other through the darkest moments. Together, they navigate the complexities of love, sacrifice, and survival in a war-torn country.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book as it did not hold back when exploring issues on domestic abuse and the problems faced by many women in Afghanistan. Hosseini developed the characters in a way where you cannot help but feel a connection to them, increasing the effect the book has on the reader. This forces awareness of real-life issues in the world in which you cannot help but feel sympathy for the ones who have suffered from them. This book sheds light on the resilience and strength which is necessary to survive the turmoil of war and shows how pain can bring different people together even in the most unlikely circumstances. Overall, I do not have any complaints about the book and believe that it depicted the struggles of women and war perfectly.
