Can You See Me? by Libby Scott & Rebecca Westcott (2019)
” I’ve been hiding parts of myself for a while now its hard to expose the bits that you’ve been made to feel uncomfortable with.”
Tally is a stunning 11-year-old who is different than others. She is autistic. She knows how people feel around her. ” They don’t understand autism. They don’t understand her.” She sees and feels everything differently to her friends and family. Now, as she enters this new stage in her life, she realises that it will be hard to be “NORMAL”.
By hiding her true self, Tally is hiding something truly remarkable and it can’t stay hidden forever. Tally’s friends are embarrassed of her and start to ignore her but they slowly start to regret it. No one understands how she feels. While Tally’s friends are ignoring her, she starts to have a great relationship with her drama teacher, Mrs Jarman. Soon the problems start to float away.
Who I recommend this book to: I recommend this book to year 7+ and anyone who is interested in an authentic, powerful and truly amazing book because Tally isn’t afraid of being her true self., and has a very creative imagination.
