Noughts and Crosses, Malorie Blackman (2001)

The book Noughts and Crosses is an alternate reality fiction based in a 22nd-century parallel universe. It centres on a boy called Callum who is a nought- a ‘colourless’ or ‘blanker’ member of the lower class there to serve the Crosses. Against a background of prejudice and distrust, intensely highlighted by violent terrorist activity by Noughts, a romance builds between Sephy (a Cross) and Callum – a romance that is to lead both of them into terrible danger…

I would recommend this book because it is very touching and heartfelt. It’s also, at times, hard to read as the themes it explores reflects what is happening in the world right now.
