The Black Flamingo, Dean Atta (2019)

Reviewer: Tania Miah, Year 10

Summary: The Black Flamingo is the tale of a boy, Michael coming to terms with his identity as a mixed-race gay teen and later finding his wings as a drag artist.

Review: The Black Flamingo is a different type of story. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions and events. It’s inspiring. It’s life changing. Black gay men exist but we don’t really hear their stories and their experiences but The Black Flamingo provides us with an insight and a better understanding.

The story focuses on finding yourself, acceptance and it tells readers in the most simplest way that being different is okay, that being gay is okay, everyone is beautiful and everyone deserves to feel happy and comfortable in their own skin.

I’ve never read a book like The Black Flamingo before and I would love to read more like it.
