On the Come Up, Angie Thomas (2019)
Plot: Brianna (Bri), a teenager and an aspiring rapper, dreams of making it as one of the greatest rappers of all time, not only for herself but to make her family’s life easier. Her mother is constantly struggling, especially as a recovering drug addict and her brother had to give up some of his dreams to be able to help the family.
Positives: Wow, what a book! On the Come Up is such a quick and compelling read. The book really proves the power of words and how deeply they can impact us.
I also really enjoyed the raps that was present throughout the book, which made the reading experience incredibly unique.
Negatives: I felt that the ending was a little abrupt. Although I really liked how hopeful it was, it felt like there was something missing.
