Horrid, Katrina Leno (2020)
‘There was a little girl,
Who had a little curl,
Right in the middle of her forehead.
When she was good,
She was very good indeed,
But when she was bad she was horrid.
– Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Plot: Jane and her mum, Ruth, have to sell up and move from California to Maine after the sudden death of Jane’s father. They return to Ruth’s childhood home which is big, old and nicknamed the ‘creepy house’. And it turns out, for good reason. Nothing is as it seems in this house or this family with secrets gently unfolding right until the very end of the book.
Positives: I loved the unravelling mystery of the book and figuring out who, or what, was behind all of the mysterious goings on.
Negatives: This is a gothic horror novel, so it may be a scary read for some!
