To Kill a Mocking Bird, Harper Lee (1960)
“Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.” – Harper Lee
Plot: Centres on lawyer Atticus Finch’s attempts to prove the innocence of Tom Robinson, a black man who has been wrongly accused of raping a white woman in 1930s Alabama.
Positives: A story that is sadly being retold to this day, this novel tackles racism and injustice in America and there is much that can be learnt through the innocent voice of the six-year old protagonist, Scout. The novel teaches both sides of an all too familiar story of a badly treated black male having to fight to prove his innocence.
Negatives: It’s sad that this novel was set in the 1930s and is a depressing reminder of how much change we still need in order to fight racism in the world.
