The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, Joan Aiken (1962)

Plot: 1832 – A period of English History that never happened.  King James III is on the throne and the country is ransacked by wolves which have migrated through the futuristic Channel Tunnel. When Bonnie Green and her cousin Sylvia fall into the hands of their new governess the dreaded Miss Slighcarp, they must use all their wits to escape unharmed – for Miss Slighcarp just as cruel and merciless as the wolves that surround the great house of Willoughby Chase.

Positives:  One of the best things about this book is the fact that although it is a classic, it is unique to all the other classic books as it is jam-packed with adventure, family, friendship and self-sacrifice. Another positive on this book is the personality difference between the characters for Bonnie is adventurous and always staying outdoors whereas her cousin likes staying indoors with her toys.

Negatives: Overall there are no negatives but other than the fact that it keeps you hooked on each page.

If you like this, you might like: The Silver Sword, Black Beauty, The Secret Garden and A Little Princess.
